EBS Tailor-made a Complete Virtualization Solution for a Non-Profit-Distributing Organization

2022-06-10

Background
Our customer is a non-profit-distributing organization owned by the Hong Kong Government. It is one of the local leaders in management system and product certification. The company offers a full spectrum of conformity assessment and certification services to help industry and commerce improving the quality of their products.

Challenges
Although our customer is a government related organization, they have very limited IT resources to support their daily work. They were facing difficulties in high operation cost including frequent hardware maintenances. Therefore, they were looking for a solution which can enable them to consolidate all their outdated servers into one centralized infrastructure for easier management and improving the efficiency.

The Solution
Considered the lack of resources in this organization, Electronic Business Solutions Limited (EBS) proposed a complete virtual machine (VM) infrastructure design that can allow them to gather their existing servers into a VM farm. With VMware handling the server virtualization, multiple operating systems can run on a single physical server as virtual machines, each with access to the underlying server’s computing resources.

The VMware also complemented with IBM SAN Storage technology, which can automate and simplify IT operations to help their employees to effectively access the information they need. IBM SAN Storage and VMware altogether provided a solution for them to easily manage and backup all of their data.

Benefits
Reduced Operational Costs
VMware virtualization helped this organization to reduce capital expenses through server consolidation and reduce operating costs through automation, at the same time minimizing lost revenue by reducing both planned and unplanned downtime.

Greater Utilization of Server Resources
The organizer said their servers operated less than 15 percent of capacity in the past. Now with VMware extracting the operating system and applications from different physical hardware to a simplified server environment, the resources utilization rate rapidly increased to 80 percent.

Simplified & Efficient Storage
Due to the business expansion, huge data volumes were pushing storage demands to a new level. IBM SAN Storage provided a better way for the organization to manage storage resources. They found a significantly improvement on storage resource utilization and flexibility.
